For many veterans, the next step after completing your military service is to work toward an academic certificate, degree, or another credential. Sometimes that can feel like starting from scratch when you’ve already got years of experience under your belt. We’ve talked before on the blog about translating the skills you learned in your military career to a civilian career. Today we’re sharing a tool that allows you to translate your military experience to college credit.

Translate Military Skills to College Credit

You’ve likely spent at least a few years in the military already, and during that time you were trained for a specific job and learned a number of skills. Your time in the military in that job role proves that you have already learned those skills. So rather than you having to sit through courses going over topics you already know in order to get credit from a college for knowing those skills, this tool allows you to map your military career to college credit.

Credits2Careers: How it Works

Credits2Careers was created by the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) in order to help veterans transition back to the civilian workforce by supporting them in their academic pursuits. It works by analyzing your military experience to determine what you already know and giving you credit for that knowledge from the start of your academic career, not after you spent time in the classroom going over material you’ve already learned.

Simply enter in the military occupation code (MOC) for the position you held in the military on the Credits2Careers website and their online tool will tell you how much college credit you could apply towards a degree or certificate in various programs. You can also input credentials you’ve already received, courses you’ve taken, or other achievements to see if you could receive additional credit. Credits2Careers will show you which academic programs your experience best matches up with, which VCCS community colleges offer those programs, and allows you to explore career paths you could pursue after receiving those credentials.

These tools can pave a faster, more affordable path toward your degree for you. They also help you make a well-informed decision about your future by showing you which civilian career paths your military experience and future degree relate to, as well as the job outlooks, potential salaries, and expected employment rates in those fields.
