Today’s blog is the third in our series of posts on learning apps for college students. Previous blogs focused on learning apps for college that help students with studying and maintaining and improving their overall wellness. This post will feature several learning apps for adults to help improve productivity and time management. Be sure to watch for our fourth and final post in this series on learning apps, which will feature several different types of tools that can help you throughout your college career.

To-Do List Apps

One of the first things many people do when they want to become more organized and more productive is to make a to-do list. Paper to-do lists are hard to keep track of so digital is best for a lot of people. Some choose to use apps that they already have on their phone for to-do lists, but these often do not sync across various devices, aren’t easily shared with others, or aren’t ideal for keeping track of different types of to-do lists (you’ll likely want different lists for school and work tasks as well as your grocery list). We’ve gathered up some of the best to-do list apps for you below that can help you keep track of everything on your plate in a simple but more organized way.

  • Todoist: Organize Your Life – Todoist is a free to-do list app that helps you keep track of everything you need to get done. You can set deadlines and recurring due dates, share projects with others, and color-code tasks according to different priority levels. You can also view your daily and weekly progress using productivity graphs.
  • Wunderlist – Wunderlist is one of the best to-do list apps available. It has a simple interface, allows you to share to-do lists with others, and syncs your lists across all your devices. You can also add due dates, reminders, subtasks, files, and comments to your tasks and organize different to-do lists.
  • Any.do – Any.do is another popular checklist app. With this app, you can also set due dates, share to-do lists, and sync your lists across devices. You can also add notes, files, and subtasks, and organize your tasks by priority.

Calendar Apps & Planner Apps

Another crucial part of improving your productivity is simply keeping track of everything you’ve got on your plate. Start by scheduling the meeting times for your classes and your work schedule. You’ll also want to keep track of the due dates for homework assignments like research papers and course projects on your schedule so you’ll never forget an assignment. Include test dates when possible as well, so you’re never blindsided by an upcoming exam and have plenty of time to study. Be sure you have time for activities like completing your homework, studying, and even family time as well by blocking off parts of your schedule for these activities too. If a to-do list isn’t your thing, some people also find it helpful to add anything that would normally go on their to-do list to a time slot on their schedule as an alternative way to manage their tasks. While some find checking items off a to-do list gratifying, others find that if it’s not on their schedule, it won’t get done.

  • iStudiez – iStudiez is a popular planner app for students. It includes a calendar feature that can be customized to your school’s schedule and uses color-coding and icons to differentiate between different types of events. It also has a special section dedicated to keeping track of your homework assignments and can help you keep track of your grades.
  • myHomework Student planner – myHomework Student Planner is a free calendar app that helps you keep track of your courses, homework, and tests. It can sync across your devices and provides you reminders about upcoming assignments.
  • The Homework App – The Homework App is another free planner app that’s widely used by college students. This app has several features to help you keep track of all of your upcoming assignments, including the ability to add subtasks to larger projects with multiple steps, color-coded subjects, a dashboard summary of upcoming tasks, an in-app calendar, and task reminders.
  • Due – Due is one of the best-rated calendar apps and is great if you’re looking for a planner app that isn’t focused only on students. It has a simple interface that allows you to set due dates for tasks, then send you repeated reminders for each task until you complete it to be sure you can’t forget anything.

Time Management Apps

Below are some additional apps that can help you improve your productivity and time management. While the apps above focus on maintaining your schedule and keeping track of everything you need to get done, these productivity apps help you through the process of actually completing the tasks on your list. Everyone is prone to procrastination when it comes to completing those time-consuming or otherwise challenging tasks, and the apps below can be particularly helpful for getting those crossed off your list.

  • Forest – Stay Focused – Forest is a top-rated productivity app that helps you focus on tasks and avoid distractions from your phone. When you need to focus on studying, writing a paper, or any other task, simply set a timer for the amount of time you need to focus. When you start the timer, you’ll plant a seed in Forest. The seed will grow into a tree over the time you’re working on completing your task. You’ll be motivated to avoid using your phone during this time because if you leave the app, your tree will wither.
  • 30/30 – 30/30 is a free time management app that can also help you focus. Using this app, you’ll set up a list of tasks and the amount of time you want to spend focusing on each task. As you progress through your day, the app will tell you when to move to the next task. It features a minimal design and can help you prioritize your schedule and stay focused on what you need to get done each day, as well as remind you to take breaks between tasks.
  • Moment – Screen Time Tracker – Moment is a free time tracker app that can help you better manage your time by showing you how much you use your phone throughout the day. This app tracks the total amount of time you spend on your phone, helps you see which apps you use the most, and logs how many times you pick up your phone each day. It’s a great app for making yourself more aware of how much time you actually spend on your phone every day and helping you break any habits you want to eliminate.

Habit Forming Apps

Building new habits takes time and consistency and rarely will anyone achieve perfection on the first try. Whether you’re trying to build up positive habits like a consistent study routine, workout habit, or going to bed at a certain time to ensure you get enough sleep, the apps below can be a tremendous help. These apps can also help you cut out negative habits like smoking.

  • Habitica – Habitica is a free habit builder app that gamifies managing your tasks and habits. Habitica allows you to input your habits, daily goals, and your to-do list. You can level up and earn rewards by completing positive habits and checking off your goals and to-do list tasks. The rewards and points you earn can help you fight monsters or help you unlock custom rewards you set for yourself. You can also play with friends to help keep yourself accountable.
  • Productive – Productive is one of the best habit-forming apps out there. This app allows you to input your habits, schedule them throughout your day, and set reminders to be sure you stay on track. You can also view your progress to help maintain motivation.
  • Streaks – Streaks is another top habit tracker app that helps you form good habits by inputting habits you want to complete each day. This app is great for maintaining motivation because your goal is to build and maintain a streak of consecutive days in which you have completed particular habits.
