This second post in our series on the best learning apps for college students will focus on wellness. Specifically, we’ll focus on developing mental, physical, and financial wellness. Meditation Apps

Those college years can be very stressful for many college students. Taking courses on top of balancing your work, social, and family obligations can make for a very hectic schedule. Stress relieving practices are essential for everyone, but especially those going through particularly taxing times. Meditation is one activity that is great for stress management as well as improving your overall health and wellbeing. Thankfully, there are many tools available to help make meditating easy, even for beginners, and you don’t need to commit a lot of time to the practice to start seeing benefits.

  • Headspace: Meditation – The Headspace app is one of the best meditation apps available. It offers guided meditations on subjects like focus and sleep, 2-3 minute mini-meditations for when you don’t have much time, sleep sounds, mindful moment reminders throughout the day, and more.
  • Calm – Calm is another popular meditation app and includes many great features, including sleep stories, guided meditations at varying lengths, breathing programs, and relaxing music.
  • Stop, Breathe & Think – Stop, Breathe & Think sets itself apart from other top meditation apps with its emotion-guided meditation features. This app allows you to check in with how you’re feeling and provides recommended meditations based on your emotions.
  • Aura: Mindfulness & Meditation – Aura is a great meditation app for beginners and those short on time. It’s guided and unguided meditations help you improve mindfulness and relieve stress in only 3 minutes.
  • 10% Happier: Meditation Daily – This free meditation app offers guided meditations, daily videos to help teach you meditation or improve your practice, advice for implementing mindfulness in all areas of your life, free access to a meditation coach, and more.

Mindfulness Apps

While meditation can help you be more mindful, it’s not the only activity to help you shed stress and live more in the present moment. Below are a few mindfulness apps that take different approaches to stress management.

  • Chill – Chill is a free mindfulness app that features daily inspirational quotes on mindfulness as well as mindfulness reminders throughout the day.
  • PAUSE – Relaxation at Your Fingertip – PAUSE is an interactive mindfulness app based on Tai Chi principles and mindfulness practice to help you release stress and bring your focus back to the present moment.
  • Happify: for Stress & Worry – One of the best mindfulness apps available, Happify helps you reduce stress and negative thoughts through various activities and games available. You can also track your progress towards having better control of your emotional wellbeing.

Fitness Apps

Another crucial part of staying healthy in college is maintaining physical fitness. Exercise is great for stress management but also helps keep you healthy in many other ways. Exercise can often be one of the first activities we eliminate from our schedules when we get busy, but even a few minutes a day of working out goes a long way. Check out some of the apps below that help keep exercise fun, interesting, and doable.

  • Sweat: Kayla Itsines Fitness – Sweat is a free exercise app design to be used either at home or in the gym. It includes different types of workouts depending on your fitness goals and offers a global community for support throughout your fitness journey.
  • Fitness Buddy: Gym Workouts – This workout app includes hundreds of gym and at-home workouts with instructions and videos for all exercises. It also includes meal plans and recipes as well as training plans developed by personal trainers.
  • 7 Minute Workout Challenge – The 7-minute workout is a great option for those days when you don’t have a lot of time to spare. Exercises are explained by video, audio, image, and text and can be performed anywhere.
  • Daily Yoga – Yoga Fitness Plan – Daily Yoga is a top yoga app that includes beginner to advanced workouts. This fitness app also includes meditation in addition to yoga and pilates workouts.
  • Asana Rebel – Yoga and Fitness – Asana Rebel is a yoga-inspired fitness app that mixes traditional yoga with interval training.

Sleep Health Apps

Sleep is another activity that is often sacrificed when life gets busy, but getting enough sleep is one of the most basic forms of self-care. Having good sleeping habits help you focus more during the day, maintain better moods, and can even help keep you maintain or achieve a healthy weight, among other long-term benefits. If you’re struggling to get plenty of sleep every night, try some of the sleep apps below to help you learn how to sleep better.

  • White Noise – As the name of this app suggests, it's a white noise app that offers a sound catalog of various relaxing sounds to help you fall asleep and stay asleep.
  • Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock – The Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock app tracks your sleep throughout the night to wake you at the best possible time in your sleep cycle. You simply set your alarm for the time you need to be awake by and the app will wake you at some point within 30 minutes prior, or ending at, that time.
  • Pillow: Smart Sleep Tracking – This sleep improvement app is similar to the previous sleep cycle app in that it also features a sleep tracking alarm clock, but it focuses heavily on various features for tracking your sleep quality over time.

Budgeting and Financial Wellness Apps

Financial health is an essential part of success for any college student whether you’re a younger student who may not have had much, if any, experience managing their finances or an older student who is accustomed to budgeting their money to cover all expenses and, hopefully, stash some away in savings as well. Higher education is one of the most expensive investments you can make, and there’s always something we can do to improve our financial wellbeing, so at whatever stage of life you are, you can find benefit in the resources below.

  • EveryDollar – EveryDollar is one of the best budget apps available. Based on Dave Ramsey’s money-management principles, this budgeting app allows you to create a fully-customized monthly budget and account for every dollar of income.
  • Goodbudget Budget Planner – Goodbudget is another top-rated budget app. This free budgeting app syncs across devices, making it a good option when you need to share your budget with your partner, family member, or friend. Another feature of this budget app is that it provides you with spending reports so you can clearly see where your money is going over time.
  • YNAB (You Need A Budget) – YNAB is yet another popular budgeting app that can help you manage your finances through your college years and beyond. Like the other budgeting apps, it allows you to share your budget, set financial goals and track your progress, and provides you with spending reports. It also allows you to sync your budget with your bank account to help you track your spending.
  • Mint: Personal Finance & Money – Mint is a financial tracker app that syncs your bank accounts, credit cards, bills, and investments all in one place. It helps you see where you’re spending, where you can save, and provides reminders about due dates for upcoming payments.
  • NerdWallet: Personal Finance – NerdWallet is another app to help you track your spending, get an overview of your finances, and find ways to improve your finances and make better progress towards your financial goals.
  • Betterment – Betterment is an investment app. It helps make investing simple by providing investment recommendations tailored to your financial situation and goals.
  • Acorns: Invest Spare Change – Acorns is another investment app that helps you put your savings to better use. If you’re looking for a simple way to get started with investing, Acorns might be a good fit for you. It helps you make recurring investments by rolling over your spare change from your everyday purchases into stocks and bonds.
