About Knowledge To Work (K2W)

Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) shares a big and bold vision for the future of higher education with its new competency-based education (CBE) model.

On October 1, 2014, LFCC was awarded a $3.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor under round four of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) program. TAACCCT specifically encourages community colleges to develop CBE programs, to use free and low-cost digital resources wherever possible, and to provide wrap-around student support services that includes contextualized remediation and adult basic education, when needed.

LFCC's grant, called Knowledge to Work (K2W), creates CBE programs to serve TAA-eligible workers, veterans, and other adults with personalized learning plans tied to competencies in high growth, high wage industries, including information technology, health information management, and advanced manufacturing. Ten employers and three community-based organizations are partners within the LFCC service region. Microsoft, the American Health Information Management Association Foundation (AHIMA), International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), Concentric Sky, MERLOT, and the Competency-Based Education Network (CBEN) are national partners.

Seven degree and certificate programs launched in fall 2015. These programs utilize personalized learning plans tied to competencies in addition to open educational resources.
